The Boston Marathon bombers last week stole a Mercedes-Benz ML350 that gets less than 20 city miles per gallon, reported Thursday night.

That's right, the Tsarneav brothers, who set off two homemade bombs at the Boston Marathon, killing three, stole a $50,000 SUV with the intention of driving it from the Boston area to New York City, but never made it because the gas-guzzler ran out of fuel.

The recently leased SUV โ€” connecting the dots, a 2013 model โ€” if equipped with the standard 3.5-liter V6 (18 city, 23 highway mpg), should be able to make the 200-mile trip on a half-tank of fuel, maybe less. And if equipped with the turbocharged 3-liter diesel V6 (20 city, 28 highway), it could make the trip to New York and back, with gas to spare.

Though the SUV had enough cargo space for the Tsarneav brothers and their "heavy objects" โ€” again, connecting dots from other media reports, a more homemade bombs they planned to detonate in New York โ€” it did not have enough gas, especially after the Boston Marathon bombers zigzagged through "Brighton, Watertown, and back to Cambridge."

The brothers were eventually forced to stop at a cash-only gas station, allowing the kidnapped owner, "Danny," enough time to escape and call for help.
